Luxury giants jostle and waver over Armani acquisition

The death of the Italian designer on 4 September 2025, at the age of 91, triggered what was a planned move to attract new investors to the Italian brand. In his will, Giorgio Armani identified three potential candidates: luxury giant LVMH, beauty group L'Oréal, which already markets Armani fragrances, and eyewear manufacturer EssilorLuxottica, which produces his glasses. Yet the Milanese fashion house has lost some of its former prestige, leaving the three contenders cautious of making a move, yet worried should a rival seize the opportunity.

Kering's deal with L'Oréal weakens bargaining position of Armani heirs

By selling its Beauté division to L'Oréal, Kering has weighed down the balance sheet of the beauty giant and reduced its room for manoeuvre for acquiring 15% of Armani. For their part, the heirs of the Italian designer, who have 12 to 18 months to complete the opening up of the group's capital, have found themselves deprived of leverage to negotiate with the other potential buyer, LVMH, which is itself torn over the deal.
